Amazon halts Blue Jay robotics project after less than 6 months
In an unexpected turn of events, Amazon recently suspended its Blue Jay robotics project after running for less than six months. Blue Jay was a project which aimed at delivering packages to customers' doorsteps using drones. Considering the immense focus the leading technology company has been placing on expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI), this decision still took stakeholders by surprise.
"We announced the Blue Jay drone delivery program less than six months ago, and while we know it has excited many customers, we are discontinuing the program," said spokeswoman Maria Renz, making an official announcement last week. "We will continue to innovate and delight customers with new technologies, and the core technology developed for [Blue Jay] will be used for other robotics projects and our employees have already been moved to other projects," she added.
Though the company did not provide exact reasons for its decision to put an end to Blue Jay, experts speculate that it might be due to its relatively expensive and untested technology. Amazon was still testing and refining the software and hardware for its drone delivery system when the decision to halt the project came through.
Despite the practical difficulties, this move by Amazon also raises several critical questions: What will happen to the employees working on the Blue Jay project? How will this decision impact the alternative delivery methods currently being explored by Amazon and other corporations? Is Amazon playing its cards too safely?
CEO Jeff Bezos has repeatedly underlined Amazon's focus on robots and artificial intelligence, suggesting that the groundwork for these initiatives will have important implications for the company's long-term strategy.
Although halting the Blue Jay drone delivery program is a setback for Amazon's AI ambitions, it may potentially turn out to be a temporary solution. In fact, the possibility of reprogramming the technology developed for Blue Jay to be integrated into different robotics projects provides
